Transferring a turtle during the summer

In the summer months it is possible to transport turtles, terrestrial or semi-aquatic in cardboard or plastic boxes. However, be sure to observe the rules of transport:

  • Maintain a constant eye on the air temperature and the condition of your turtle. Check to ensure that the turtle hasn’t turned over. Also, make sure you clean up any animal waste.
  • The turtle’s carrier shouldn’t be too tiny or large for the turtle.
  • If the turtle escapes, make sure the container or box is tightly sealed.
  • If the temperature in the air is higher than 28 degrees Celsius, you can put a damp cloth that has been soaked in water in the container.
  • Put a bedding layer in the middle of your carrier. You can make use of napkins, paper towels or sawdust, wood chip, meadow hay, peat dust, or even towels.
  • The carrier must be ventilated. The holes should be located on the sides of the container or the lid.
  • Be sure to keep the pet’s carrier clear of drafts and direct sunlight to avoid overcooling or overheating the reptile.

Aquatic turtles (Trionyx) are best handled with an aquarium or in plastic containers. For short-term transportation then you can cover your pet with soaked towels or place it in a damp, cloth bag.

How to transport an endangered turtle in winter?

The pet needs to be kept warm if temperatures fall below 15 degrees Celsius. Since turtles are cold-blooded they require warming up by a source of heat. There are two methods to accomplish this:

  • Heating pad. The turtle is placed inside a tightly sealed container one of the beds with the heating pad right next to it. To ensure that the pet is not overheated it is recommended to put a towel between the heating pad and the turtle.
  • Human warmth. Wrap the turtle in a dense fabric before placing it inside a pocket on the outside.

You shouldn’t feed turtles for more than 24hrs before they leave. Turtles can live by themselves for a few days. The turtle is able to live without water for two days.
